Are you experiencing persistent ear, nose, throat or neck symptoms?
Many people experience ear, nose or throat symptoms—like blocked ears, nasal congestion, sore throats or neck lumps—without realising they could be signs of a more serious issue. While some symptoms go away on their own, others may be linked to underlying ENT conditions that need medical attention.
The sections below help you understand the most common symptoms related to the ears, nose, throat and neck. Each group explains what to look out for, what it might mean, and when you should see an ENT specialist. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, early evaluation can help you feel better, sooner

Ear Symptoms
Your ears are responsible not only for hearing but also for balance and spatial orientation. When problems arise, they can affect daily comfort, communication, and even your safety. Many ear symptoms are treatable, but early evaluation is important to avoid long-term complications.

When Should You See An ENT Specialist?
If your ear symptoms are persistent, worsening, or affecting your ability to hear, balance, or concentrate, it’s time to see an ENT specialist. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and restore your ear health quickly and effectively.
Ear Pain or Pressure
A dull ache, sharp pain, or pressure in the ear could be caused by an ear infection (otitis media or externa), fluid buildup, sinus-related congestion, or barotrauma from air travel.
Hearing Loss or Blocked Sensation
If you notice reduced or muffled hearing, it may be due to impacted earwax, fluid in the middle ear (glue ear), age-related hearing loss, or damage to the inner ear. In children, this may affect speech development.
Tinnitus (Ringing or Buzzing Sounds)
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no external noise is present. It may indicate hearing loss, prolonged noise exposure, ear infections, or even issues with the jaw or neck.
Ear Discharge (Otorrhoea)
Pus or fluid leaking from the ear is often a sign of infection or a ruptured eardrum. It may be accompanied by pain, fever, or temporary hearing loss.
Dizziness or Balance Problems
Vertigo or unsteadiness may be linked to inner ear disorders such as vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis. These symptoms should not be ignored, especially if they affect mobility or daily function.
Itchy or Irritated Ears
Persistent itching may be due to eczema, fungal infections, or allergic reactions in the ear canal, and often leads to repeated scratching that worsens inflammation.

Nose Symptoms
Your nose plays an essential role in breathing, filtering air, and your sense of smell. When nasal symptoms persist, they can affect your sleep, daily comfort, and even your overall health. Common nose issues may be linked to allergies, infections, or structural problems—and many are treatable with the right care.

When Should You See An ENT Specialist?
If your nasal symptoms persist beyond a few weeks, recur frequently, or impact your ability to breathe or smell, it’s important to consult an ENT specialist. Long-term relief often starts with accurate diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan.
Nasal Congestion or Blocked Nose
A constantly blocked or stuffy nose can be caused by allergic rhinitis, sinus infections, nasal polyps, or a deviated septum. If over-the-counter decongestants stop working, it may be time for further evaluation.
Frequent Sneezing or Runny Nose
This is often due to environmental allergies or irritants like dust, pollen, or smoke. When it occurs daily or interferes with your lifestyle, allergy testing and tailored treatment can provide lasting relief.
Facial Pain or Pressure
Pain around the cheeks, forehead, or eyes may indicate sinusitis—an infection or inflammation of the sinus cavities. Chronic sinusitis may require medical therapy or endoscopic sinus surgery.
Reduced or Lost Sense of Smell
Loss of smell (anosmia or hyposmia) is commonly linked to viral infections (including COVID-19), nasal polyps, or chronic sinus disease. In some cases, it may also signal neurological concerns and should be evaluated early.
Nosebleeds (Epistaxis)
Occasional nosebleeds are common, especially in dry environments, but frequent or heavy episodes may suggest underlying nasal vessel fragility, infections, or tumours that require ENT review.
Postnasal Drip or Mucus in the Throat
A feeling of mucus dripping down the back of the throat is often linked to chronic sinusitis, allergies, or nasal inflammation. It can cause chronic throat clearing, cough, or bad breath.

Throat Symptoms
Your throat is involved in speaking, swallowing, breathing, and even digestion. Persistent throat symptoms can interfere with daily life, disrupt sleep, and may indicate infections, inflammation, or more serious conditions. Understanding the root cause is key to proper treatment.

When Should You See An ENT Specialist?
If your throat symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, keep recurring, or interfere with your voice, swallowing, or sleep, you should consult an ENT specialist. Early intervention helps prevent complications and supports long-term comfort and function.
Sore Throat or Throat Pain
A sore throat may be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, acid reflux, or even environmental irritants. If it lasts more than a week or keeps recurring, it should be assessed.
Hoarseness or Voice Changes
Changes in your voice, including hoarseness or strain, could result from vocal cord irritation, overuse, reflux, or growths like nodules or cysts. Persistent voice changes (more than 2–3 weeks) need specialist evaluation.
Difficulty Swallowing (Dysphagia)
Pain or trouble swallowing can stem from infections, enlarged tonsils, throat inflammation, or even more serious conditions involving the oesophagus or throat muscles. It may also present with weight loss or choking episodes.
Frequent Throat Clearing or Cough
Constant throat clearing or chronic cough may be signs of postnasal drip, silent reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux), or throat irritation from allergens or dryness.
Lump or Tightness in the Throat
A feeling of something stuck in the throat may be caused by reflux, muscle tension, or, less commonly, a mass or growth. If the sensation persists, it warrants an ENT examination.
Tonsil Swelling or Infections
Recurring tonsillitis, enlarged tonsils, or abscesses can cause pain, fever, snoring, and swallowing difficulty. In children, these may affect sleep and school attendance and may require surgery.

Neck & General Symptoms
Symptoms affecting the neck or related systems often overlap with ENT conditions. Lumps, swelling, snoring, and sleep-related issues may seem minor but could point to infections, thyroid problems, or airway obstructions. Prompt assessment ensures peace of mind and effective care.

When Should You See An ENT Specialist?
If you experience any neck lumps, sleep-related breathing symptoms, or unexplained changes in swallowing or breathing, it’s best to consult an ENT specialist. Early diagnosis allows for accurate treatment and peace of mind.
Lump or Swelling in the Neck
A visible or palpable lump may indicate an enlarged lymph node, thyroid nodule, cyst, or—in rare cases—a tumour. Persistent or painless swellings should be evaluated without delay.
Snoring or Noisy Breathing During Sleep
Loud snoring, gasping, or pauses in breathing may be signs of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), often due to nasal blockage, large tonsils, or soft palate issues. Sleep-related breathing disorders can affect both children and adults.
Fatigue or Poor Sleep Quality
If you’re waking up tired despite adequate sleep, it may be due to unrecognised airway obstruction during sleep. ENT specialists can assess nasal and throat structures contributing to disrupted rest.
Persistent Neck Pain or Tightness
Neck discomfort related to ENT may be linked to muscle tension, throat infections, or referred pain from the ears, jaw, or sinuses. It can also be associated with postural strain or glandular swelling.
Difficulty Breathing Through the Nose
Chronic mouth breathing or blocked nasal airflow may signal a deviated septum, nasal polyps, or chronic allergies. This can also impact facial development in children.
Changes in Swallowing or Sensation in the Neck
Feeling of fullness, discomfort, or tightness when swallowing could be associated with thyroid enlargement, pharyngeal issues, or reflux. These symptoms should be investigated, especially if persistent.
